Amazon.co.uk Review
Mythology and the modern world collide in this epic quest for justice by Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), your basic below-average, misfit student whose family life is a mess and who's misunderstood by everyone except his best friend, Grover (Brandon T. Jackson). A voice warns that everything is about to change as Percy enters the New Roman and Greek Art Gallery on a school field trip, and, indeed, it does. Percy's substitute teacher morphs into a mythical beast and tries to attack him, and it's revealed that Percy is the son of Poseidon, and a true demigod. Percy also discovers that Grover is really a satyr--half-human, half-goat--and his sworn protector, and that one of his teachers is a centaur--half-horse, half-man--who's more committed to Percy's education than he could ever have imagined. On top of it all, Percy is the prime suspect in the recent theft of Zeus's lightning bolt and is being hunted by the gods. Following these shocking revelations, Percy is taken to a special training camp to learn to control and use his exceptional powers, and in the process, his mother is imprisoned by Hades. Against all advice, Percy, his protector Grover, and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), daughter of Athena, leave camp to rescue Percy's mother from the underworld. Their quest is extremely dangerous and puts them squarely in the path of Medusa (Uma Thurman), with her venomous hair and gaze that turns people to stone. The three also battle a five-headed, fire-breathing beast and visit a Las Vegas casino patrons never leave, and finally they find themselves deep in the underworld, at the mercy of the unpredictable Persephone, wife of Hades. Somehow, Percy must both convince the gods he did not steal Zeus's lightning and prevent a war of the gods that could potentially destroy the entire world. Based on the books by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief is an exciting action film rich with ancient mythology, yet set squarely in the 21st century. Enriched by strong special effects and some potently disturbing images, it is a powerful story about family, trust, determination and love. --Tami Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and interesting movie to watch   February 26, 2010

Percy Jackson & The Lighting Thief is an enjoyable and interesting movie to watch. The genre of movie is fanstasy, which ocasionally I enjoy watching. I would class the movie as not being light or heavy. It is cross between the two categories. The movie is a perfect choice for family viewing.

The ideas and concepts introduced are quite interesting and original. I really appreciate the way and the manner in which Greek Mythology blends with the modern world. It provides a real educational and amazing experience. In the mythology arena, each god and goodness represents various themes. In the movie, the focus is directed to a few gods, as it would not be possible cover every gods and goddesses. The area of Greek mythology is quite complex and covers a broad spectrum. It is a fascinating area to learn about.

The plot is about a lad known as Percy Jackson. He suffers from dyslexia, low in confidence and has a few friends : protector Grover and beauty Annabeth. Percy might not be academically bright, but is blessed with a gift and shows real guts and courage to prove a point to everyone. No one is perfect in the world. It is the key message movie conveyed to me, but you have to make the best out of life opportunities. Percy is about to embark on a mission with the aid of two friends. The journey reveals shocking truths dating million years ago, as Percy is about to find out. His real father is Poseidon, a god of sea, who abandoned Percy at a young age. Can Percy be forgiving? Percy is on a verge of a dangerous mission to discover who stole Zeus's lighting rod and return it righteously to the owner, otherwise a war will break out between the gods and the present world would meltdown. The exciting and action packed adventure takes the trio to the most terrifying places ever imagined. It is filled with growling beasts, scary settings, sinister characters, intimidating statues and towering greek gods. These are key features associated with fanstasy movies. Can peace be restored; otherwise the world would face the consequences? It is up to the trio to save the world from destruction and forces of evil.

Although, the movie is targeted at children, its appeal maintain interest with adult viewers. It is intended to be a factual movie, with an adventure to unfold. The idea of blending past with the present works really well. It is a fanstasy movie which shares a few similarities with Harry Potter. The focus is about an unfortunate individual and how a new world transforms the character's life. Percy Jackson & The Lighting Thief raises interesting points and deals with the theme of Greek Mythology expertly and to almost perfection. The area has been simplified well in the movie. The characters are quite strong, special effects are outstanding and cinemagraphy is quite impressive. Overall, it was worth watching the movie for its educational value and originality.

The creatures have a genuine sense of menace that will make young ones jump, pretty strong stuff for its target audience.

A film that was unfairly compared as an american Harry Potter.
A good film and story in its own right.

Well worth a watch.

I think this is a great movie as I've been to see it twice at the cinema!!!!
I've read the books which I recommend highly so I was anxious to see the movie and I really hope that all 5 books are turned into movies!!!

Unfortunately I can't say that the movie reflects the book brilliantly here is a list of the problems:
Annabeth doesn't have blonde hair or grey eyes
Percy starts at camp as Poseidons child he is in fact meant to find out that Poseidon is his dad when capture the flag is played.
Neither Clarisse, Ares, Silena, Beckendorf or Dionysus are mentioned at all
There is not an oracle included
The ending is so different from the original
They don't include burning an American monument or blowing up a bus
And just to add Clarisse must be mentioned she plays a big role in the second book

this is why my review is called Hmmmmm..... I really can't make up my mind but it really is a great family movie and I'm going to buy the DVD! and all the others if they create movies out of them!

3 out of 5 stars Ok Film, bit of a let down. 3 1/2 stars   February 27, 2010

I would rather give this 3 1/2 stars but have to settle with 3.

If you go to see the film with no pre-conceptions of the books/storyline then you will probably really enjoy it. I tried to switch off my thoughts of story from reading the book, and yes i could see that it is a good film, the effects are good and there are quite a lot of laughs, mainly delivered from Percy's Satyr friend Grover. The storyline does flow quite well and the action sequences are cool.
You meet a host of creatures from Hydra, Minotaurs, Medusa and many more, and of course the Greek Gods.
I think Poseidon was quite well cast and Steve Coogan as Hades was weird but funny. I loved Pierce Brosnan as Chiron the centaur, i think in a weird way it suited him!
Kids will love it and have their imagination captured, and then may be begging for more info on Greek Mythology. So just by looking at it as a film i would of given it 4 stars. Adults and adolescences might also enjoy it. (i am 21 and saw the film with my mum and older brother and they both really enjoyed it) (neither had read the books.)

However, for those that love the books, this film is very disappointing, they have changed the basic storyline, the kids in the books should be 12/13 but here are shown as 16/17. they have cut out 2 of the characters Ares & Clarisse, which form a vital part of the story in the book, the plot still works in the film, but loses some of the magic and adventure the book offers. So comparing it to the book i would give it 2 maybe 3 stars at best, that is why i say i would like to give it 3 1/2 stars in total. combining the two ratings
I know films can never be truly faithful to the books, but this was changed so much i felt very let down.

Really i find it hard to make my mind up about it, could be good, but not as good as book storyline. I would recommend you give it a try though.

I would see the rest if they made them into films mainly out of curiosity, they could be good.

Personally, I really enjoyed this film. It was fast moving and had a good story behind it with a great cast, especially Brandon T Jackson as Grover. However, I had not read the book series before the film, but did read them after seeing it. There are a lot of differences between the book and the film, so I can see why some fans of the series may dislike the film.
