Amazon.co.uk Review
In yet another example of Demi Moore's astonishing narcissism, this appalling adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Great American Novel becomes a teary, talk-show-worthy story of a woman rediscovering the erotic, of interrupted love, of a brave-but-beleaguered heroine's personal struggle against male stupidity. Never mind that this has little to do with Hawthorne's magnificent, protofeminist book, which is a million times more relevant today than this film could ever be. Director Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields) deserves to be horsewhipped for colluding with Moore's self-fascination, while Gary Oldman should be kicked in the pants for allowing the novel's main character to come off as an inconsequential ninny. Making matters worse, Robert Duvall can be seen ridiculously dancing with a deerskin on his head. If The Scarlet Letter were a joke, it would be a very bad joke. But it's not, and that's worse. --Tom Keogh

One of my favourite films, no matter how many bad or average reviews it gets. Beautifully filmed, great soundtrack, romantic, moving, and Gary Oldman plays the character very well. I was initially surprised when reading the book to see that at the end he dies, rather than riding off into the sunset with Hester, as they do in the film. But I love that the film used it's artistic license like that. Much more important things in life than sticking rigidly to a book - the film has a happy ending, and the film is an enjoyable and moving historical romance .... great!

5 out of 5 stars The Scarlett Letter   May 20, 2010

The Scarlett Letter is a good Romantic action packed movie, but not like a soft romantic "Jane Austen" movie, as there is a scene "Jane Austen" would never write about, the romantic love scene were the two main characters can't resist each other any longer "I don't need to be specific".

On the whole very enjoyable to watch, about forbidden love, as the two characters struggle with peoples judgemental 17th century minds. Hester becomes an outcast by the village people who put her on trial, and brand her with a scarlet letter "A" for adulterer, when she falls pregnant after a love affair with the local minister, but she won't speak her seducers name and is imprisoned the duration of her pregnancy. The minister in the meantime is full of despair as he tries to visit Hester in prison, but they deny him visiting rights. He wants to tell the truth but he keeps silent for Hester's sake who makes him promise her to keep silent, unless she can't bear it any longer. Her husband, thought by all was murdered by Indians, suddenly turns up in the village, then all hell breaks loose.

2 out of 5 stars Poor Gary!   March 27, 2010

Nothing like the novel.
Also, I am a Gary Oldman fan, but in this role I felt he was a damp squib!
Demi is also far too priggish!

3 out of 5 stars Good romp but nothing like the book   March 9, 2010

Having bought the film as a slight short cut to reading the book, I became aware very early on that I was pretty sure the film had nothing in common with the book except the name. Character names are the same, and indeed Hester sleeping with the minister and having to wear the scarlet letter 'A'. But other than that there is nothing similar. The film provides an interesting account as to what happens before the book begins, and then shares nothing similar in plot to the book. Chillingworth turns into a psychopathic fake indian guy who scalps some random character that isn't in the book and Dimmesdale is FAR better looking, charistamtic and sympathetic in Gary Oldman's protrayal than the character in the book. Basically, I really enjoyed the film and I would recommend it to anyone and especially to Gary Oldman fans. But if you're looking for an accurate adaptation of the Nathanial Hawthorne book then this isn't the film for you.

This film is very useful if you have read the book and are slightly confused about some of the plot/story.
